Within the last few years, Halloween and many other western holidays, have arrived in China. Although sometimes the meaning behind the holiday gets a little lost, Chinese businesses, malls and theme parks embrace these days and have a little fun.
Below are some Halloween themed vocabulary and sentences to learn and enjoy. You never know when you might need them!
万圣节 (wàn shèng jié) Halloween
要做一个万圣节灯笼， 你先得挖空这个南瓜。(yào zuò yī gè wàn shèng jié dēng lóng, nǐ xiān de wā kōng zhè ge nán guā) When making a Halloween lantern, you must first hollow out a pumpkin.
女巫 (nǚwū) Witch
Example Sentence:
孩子们都不喜欢童话故事里的女巫。(hái zi men dōu bù xǐ huan tóng huà gù shì lǐ de nǚ wū.) = The children don’t like the witch in the fairy tale.
鬼 (guǐ) Ghost
Example Sentence:
他假装成鬼去吓唬别人。(tā jiǎ zhuāng chéng guǐ qù xià hu bié rén.) = He pretended to be a ghost to scare other people.
吸血鬼 (xīxuèguǐ) Vampire
Example Sentence:
我昨晚做噩梦里看见了吸血鬼。(wǒ zuó wǎn zuòè mèng lǐ kàn jiàn le xī xuè guǐ.) = I had a nightmare last night and saw the vampire.
狼人 (lángrén) Werewolf
Example Sentence:
男孩们都很喜欢狼人。(nán hái men dōu hěn xǐ huan láng rén.) = Boys like werewolves very much.
蝙蝠 (biān fú) Bat
Example Sentence:
蝙蝠一般夜晚才出来觅食。 (biān fú yī bān yè wǎn cái chū lái mì shí.) – Bats generally go foraging at night.
骷髅 (kū lóu) Skeleton
Example Sentence:
草丛里的骷髅把我吓坏了。(cǎo cóng lǐ de kū lóu bǎ wǒ xià huài le) = The skeleton in the grass freaked me out.
僵尸 (jiāngshī) Zombie
Example Sentence:
那块墓地里有很多僵尸。 (nà kuài mù dì lǐ yǒu hěn duōjiāng shī.) = There are many zombies in the graveyard.
怪物 (guàiwu) Monster
Example Sentence:
你要打败所有的怪物才算赢这个游戏。(nǐ yào dǎ bài suǒ yǒu de guài wu cái suàn yíng zhè ge yóu xì.) = You need to beat all of the monsters to win the game.
干尸 (gānshī) Mummy
Example Sentence:
不要接近那些干尸！(gān shī bù yào jiē jìn nà xiē gān shī!) = Don’t get too close to those mummies!
黑猫 (hēi māo) Black cat
Example Sentence:
她的黑猫跑上前来， 在他们腿上蹭来蹭去。(tā de hēi māo pǎo shàng qián lái, zài tā men tuǐ shàng cèng lái cèng qù) Her cat came and rubbed itself on their legs.
稻草人 (dào cǎo rén) Scarecrow
Example Sentence:
他的小说里充斥着稀奇古怪的人物：丑陋的怪人，小丑和稻草人。(tā de xiǎo shuō lǐ chōng chì zhe xī qí gǔ guài de rén wù: chǒu lòu de guài rén, xiǎo chǒu hé dào cǎo rén.) His novels are full of strange characters: grotesques, clowns and scarecrows.
蜘蛛 (zhī zhū) Spider
Example Sentence:
惧怕蜘蛛 (jù pà zhī zhū) to be terrified of spiders.
恶魔 (è mó) Demon
Example Sentence:
我认为这是恶魔在作祟。(wǒ rèn wéi zhè shì è mó zài zuò suì) There is a demon at work.
南瓜灯 (nán guā dēng) Pumpkin/ Jack-o-Lantern
Example Sentence:
孩子们喜欢在万圣节玩南瓜灯。(hái zi men xǐ huan zài Wàn shèng jié wán nán guā dēng) = The children like to play with jack-o-lanterns at Halloween.
墓碑 (mù bēi) Tombstone
Example Sentence:
坟墓用了一块简陋的墓碑来标记。(fén mù yòng le yī kuài jiǎn lòu de mù bēi lái biāo jì) The grave was marked with a simple tombstone.
糖果 (táng guǒ) Candy
Example Sentence:
孩子们看到糖果时垂涎欲滴。(hái zi men kàn dào táng guǒ shí chuí xián yù dī) The kids drooled over the candy they saw.
服装 (fú zhuāng) Costume

Example Sentence:

闹鬼的 (nào guǐ de) Haunted
Example Sentence
我绝对不进那个闹鬼的房子。(wǒ jué duì bù jìn nèi gè nào guǐ de fáng zi.) = I will never go into that haunted house.
邪恶的 (xié è de) Wicked
Example Sentence:
我不喜欢她邪恶的眼神。 (wǒ bù xǐ huan tā xié è de yǎn shén.) = I dislike her wicked eyes.
颤抖 (chàn dǒu) Shiver
Example Sentence:
他太害怕了所以一整天都在颤抖。(tā tài hài pà le suǒ yǐ yī zhěng tiān dōu zài chàn dǒu) = He was so frightened; he has been shivering all day.
惨叫 (cǎn jiào) Scream
Example Sentence:
她的父母听到她在房间里惨叫后立刻冲进了她的房间。(tā de fù mǔ tīng dào tā zài fáng jiān lǐ cǎn jiào hòu lì kè chōng jìn le tā de fáng jiān.) = Her parents rushed into her room after hearing her screams.
魔鬼 (mō guǐ) Evil
Example Sentence:
他们认为他们国家的领导人是个魔鬼。(tā men rèn wéi tā men guó jiā de lǐng dǎo rén shì gèmó guǐ.) = They thought their country’s leader was evil.
古怪 (gǔ guài) Grotesque
Example Sentence:
